Charles Billich

Charles
Billich came to Australia in 1956. Attended Salzburg Academy,
National Gallery Art School, R.M.I.T. and the University of the
Philippines Art School.
Charles Billich has yearly
exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Spoleto, Sydney and
Melbourne and is:
The City of Melbourne Portrait Artist, First
Fleet Re-enactment Artist, as well as a Bicentenary projects.
In Italy 1987 he was awarded the Spoleto Prize.
Billich is fascinated by the urban landscape,
even though he prefers country living.
He celebrates these monuments to human folly by means of his
cityscapes, his shorthanded
views of many world centres. Obsessed by the subject he is
working on many projects.
At times accused of being mechanical and
set-designing, Billich defends himself
with epistemological arguments. By themselves, his cities don't
represent a career ambition,
but are environmental cadenzas which one, we hope in a not too
distant future, will result in
a consistent rhythm of ethereal situation, thus creating a
distinct and motivated surreal language.
But he is more versatile than that. We can see his virtuoso
versatility expressed
in theatrical inventions on ballet and surreal mis-en-scene.
.....
....

Portraiture,
the figurative and maritime are other "fortes".
Melbourne has inspired Billich for many years. He sees the beauty in its architecture, its rivers and parks.
His paintings are in Queensland Art Gallery,
Exhibition Building Trust, RAAF, City of Melbourne,
Art Bank, National Bank and many Private and Corporate
Collections.

Richard Weatherly

Richard
Weatherly has been described as "one of the three finest
young bird artists in the world....
an indefatigable field biologist in his own right, he brings rare
detail and sparkling colour to his birds,
revealing
a deep understanding and affection for them."
Dr. Lester L. Short, Chairman,
Department of Ornithology, American Museum of Natural History,
March 1882.
Richard Weatherly was born in 1947 and
brought up on a sheep station near Mortlake
in western Victoria, where he still lives. He was educated at
Geelong Grammar School and
always had a deep interest in drawing and wood-carving. While at
Cambridge University he carved
two animals out of an old gunstock. These were immediately sold
in London and, thus encouraged,
Richard decided to concentrate on his artwork.
....
His
paintings are a natural progression from the working sketches he
made from his carvings.
....
In
England Richard was greatly assisted by David Reid Henry,
one of the greatest bird painters of the times, and spend several
months working with him.
Richard first exhibited paintings with the
Society of Wildlife Artists of Great Britain
and in the World Wildlife Exhibition at London's Sladmore Gallery
in 1970.
After spending much of 1971 in Zimbabwe, he held his first
one-man exhibition,
of British and African wildlife, at the Sladmore Gallery. In 1972
he exhibited paintings in the
"Bird Artists of Today" exhibition, followed by a
second one-man exhibition,
again at the Sladmore Gallery, at the end of the year.
On his return to Australia he was a founding
member of the Society of Wildlife Artists
of Australasia and was President for the first four years. For
eight years he travelled extensively
throughout Australia and Papua New Guinea working on his
illustrations for the monograph
"The Fairy Wrens". This was published in 1982
concurrent with an one-man exhibition of the paintings
and drawings held in Melbourne. In 1984 Richard held another
one-man exhibition
at the "Australian Galleries", Melbourne. In 1985 he
was invited to Canada and the
United States to do the field work for a commission for Ducks
Unlimited (Canada);
to paint the American Wood Duck for their Limited Edition Folio
of "North American Waterfowl".
In 1986 Richard's paintings "Avocets" was accepted for
exhibition by the prestigious
Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's "Birds in Art" show
in Wausau, Wisconsin.
The painting was one of only fifty to be chosen for a year-long
tour that began at the
Frye Art Museum in Seattle and ended at the Beijing Natural
History Museum in Beijing,
China. This was the first major exhibition of western wildlife
art to show in China.
Richard is an Honorary Associate in
Ornithology at the Museum of Victoria, Australia.
His paintings are in many Institutions and Private Collections
throughout the world.
