Ann James
An Illustrator's Story


Ann James, an illustrator was born in Melbourne - Victoria Australia in October 1952.

She grew up in Ringwood and attended Norwood Primary School and Tintern Girls School.


Ann trained as an arts and crafts teacher and taught at Doveton and Ringwood High School
before being seconded to the Publications Branch of the Education Department
of Victoria, where she worked as a graphic designer and illustrator of
educational publications from 1978 to 1988.

Now she Co-directs a Gallery for Children's Book illustration at Gasworks Park - Albert Park.

Her first trade children's book was " A Pet for Mrs. Arbuckle "
by Gwenda Smyth, a publications branch colleague.

Richard Linton
Historical Marine Paintings


Richard Linton was born in Melbourne - Victoria, Australia.
Drawing at an early age and particular interested in all things nautical.

Richard began in photolithography after studying among the first at the
Australian School of Printing. His first serious painting of a sailing ship was in 1957
and after some years made painting his profession. With his knowledge of printing
Richard produces the highest quality limited edition prints of his work.

1788 First Fleet in Botany Bay


One of the few marine artists commissioned by the Franklin Mint to have his paintings
reproduced in the old method of hand lithography in Paris at the famous house
of Moulet renowned for the reproductions of Chagall, Matisse and Picasso.

Brochures were printed in five languages and marketed worldwide.

His love of history and meticulous attention to detail makes him a world
authority on the subject and unique in todays art world.

Barbara McManus was born in Melbourne - Victoria, Australia. Commenced painting in 1972.
She studied under Carol Boothman, Jean Carson-Gray and Roy Griffith.

Syd Tunn was born in Melbourne in 1946.
Studied art from 1962 to 1965 at Caulfield Institute of Technology,
majoring in painting, life drawing and printmaking.

Ono Henderson
Ono Henderson was born in Melbourne in 1949.

Studied art in the late 1960th at Swinburn Institute.

Hiltrud Barfuss

" I believe to draw is observe and translating that vision is the challenge.

The human figure remains the most consistent and inexhaustible source of inspiration -
subject with which we can develop self awareness.

The mood and medium are the tools of expression - an important ingredient of every drawing.

Hildrud Barfus was educated at Camberwell Girls School and
studied art at Swinburn Technical College.

Herman Pekel

Herman Pekel was born in Melbourne in 1956. Painting from the age eight,
studied with Ernest Buckmaster and Roger Weber when eleven.

Since 1974 has held 12 Solo and 14 Group Exhibitions.

Gil Brooks
Art Print making


Gil was educated at Melbourne Boys High School.
Studied under Ian Bow at Victorian Artist's Society.
An interest in art led him to the screen printing industry where he
successfully ran his own business, being a foundation member of
The Screen Printers' Association. He now produces handcrafted limited edition prints.

He won the 1982 Ideal Home Award for architectural design.

Walter Magilton
Landscape in Oils - Working from memory and pencil sketch

After an early life on a dairy farm in Western Victoria, Walter trained as an Art and Craft teacher
with Education Department of Victoria and holds both an Art Teacher Certificate
and a Diploma of Art from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology
where he studied Sculpture and Gold and Silversmithing.

Walter has a number of sculpture commissions in Churches and Colleges
in Victoria and jewllery in private collections, but in recent years painting has been
the major and more rewarding involvement. He regards himself as a realist and works
in a range of media, but particularly oil and at a wide variety of subject matter.

He has a profound affinity with the varying moods of nature, a legacy of his country upbringing.
The "Grand" landscape is a constant challenge and a subject he is intimately familiar with.
The paintings can be subtle but at the same time vital and rich in colour and texture.

1975 - 8 Awards, 1976 - 13 Awards including 6 First Przes.

1977 - 13 Awards including the Bayswater Rotary Prize,
Sunbury Rotary Prize and the Lilydale Shire Prize.

1979 - 15 Awards including the Dick Ovenden Prize,
the Box Hill Lions Award, Sunbury Rotary Prize,
Keilor Prize, the Brighton Prize
and the Kew Rotary Prize.


1980 - 14 Awards including the Keilor Prize and the Box Hill Rotary Prize.

1981 - 15 Awards including the Keilor Prize, Box Hill Art Group Prize, Canberra
Three Schools Exhibition, Wesley College Prize and the Springvale Prize.

1982 - 28 Awards including Oil Painting Prize at the V.A.S. Spring Exhibition.

1983 - 21 Awards including the Keilor Prize and Brighton Prize.

1983 - In addition 3 Highly Commended Awards at Camberwell Rotary Exhibitions and
a Regular Exhibitor in the Victorian Artist's Society "Anual" Special Exhibition.

1984 - Numerous Awards: Best Painting in Show at Frankston and Keilor,
the Bayswater Prize and the Judges' Prize ( Oils ) at Essendon.
